Road Roller

A road roller, sometimes called roller-compactors or just roller, is a piece of engineering equipment used to compact gravel, crushed stone, sand-macadam mixture, soil, concrete, asphalt and rock filling etc. It is suitable for the construction of road, and foundation works.

Road rollers use the weight of the vehicle to compress the surface being rolled. Initial compaction of the substrate is performed by using a pneumatic-tyred roller, with two rows of pneumatic tyres. Because of the flexibility of the tyres, the roller can operate effectively on uneven ground. The finish is done using metal-drum rollers to ensure a smooth, even result.

Rollers can also be used in compaction of landfill. Such compactors generally have knobbed wheels, and do not achieve a smooth surface.

Pneumatic smooth-tire rollers are generally used for compaction of various cohesive and non-cohesive materials such as sandy soil, crushed stone, stabilized soils, bituminous concrete and rolling cement concrete (RCC) on road surface construction, especially for final compaction of asphalt surface on high-class highway.

Hydraulic vibratory road rollers with single drum are designed for compaction of non-cohesive materials such as gravel, crushed stone, sand-macadam mixture, sandy soil and rock filling etc. on base course, sub-base and embankment fill construction.

Hydraulic double drum vibratory rollers are ideally suited for compaction of various stabilized soils, bituminous concrete and rolling cement concrete on road surface construction.

On some road rollers, the drums may be filled with water sand or ores on site to accomplish the desired weight. When empty, the machine is lighter, easier and cheaper to transport between work sites.

Additional compaction may be realized by vibrating the roller drums, making a small, light machine perform as well as a much heavier one. Vibration is typically caused by piston motor inside the drum to whose shaft eccentric weights have been attached.
